How long does helium keep in a disposable or refillable cylinder (under pressure)?
Helium is an inert gas: it does not break down or spoil over time. Stored properly – in a dry room, away from direct sunlight and temperature swings – a helium cylinder keeps for many years without any loss of gas quality. The only thing to watch is the condition of the cylinder itself and its valve.
Can a cylinder be transported lying down?
Yes, transporting it horizontally is allowed, but the cylinder must be firmly secured so that it cannot shift, take a knock or damage the valve while the vehicle is moving.
Is helium explosive?
No, helium is non-flammable and non-explosive. The cylinder is under pressure, though, so if it falls, takes a knock or the valve is damaged, the sudden release of gas can be dangerous. Handle the cylinder carefully and transport it secured.
Can you inhale helium?
We do not recommend inhaling helium under any circumstances. Inhaling it straight from the cylinder is especially dangerous: the gas comes out under high pressure and can seriously injure the lungs and cause oxygen deprivation. People have died from inhaling helium, including from balloons. We use helium strictly for its purpose – inflating balloons – and advise against using it in any other way.
How does swapping a refillable helium cylinder work?
Call or message us – we will agree a convenient time, and the next day we will bring a new cylinder and collect the empty one. You can also bring the cylinder to us for a swap yourself.
Do you work at weekends?
Yes, at weekends pickup is available – you can collect a cylinder at a time that suits you. Be sure to call us before coming to check availability and agree a time.
