How many balloons you get from one helium cylinder
Published , updated
The count depends on two things – how much gas the cylinder holds and how large the balloon is. Both tables are below.
Disposable cylinders
A ready-to-use kit: a cylinder of helium and an inflation nozzle. It cannot be refilled.
| Cylinder size | Latex 23 cm (9″) | Latex 28 cm (11″) | Latex 75 cm (30″) | Foil 45 cm (18″) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 l | ≈ 20 | ≈ 12 | ≈ 2 | ≈ 6 |
| 7 l | ≈ 30 | ≈ 18 | ≈ 3 | ≈ 9 |
| 13.5 l | ≈ 50 | ≈ 30 | ≈ 5 | ≈ 15 |
| 22 l | ≈ 90 | ≈ 53 | ≈ 9 | ≈ 26 |
Refillable cylinders
The cylinder is rented and the helium is bought separately. A cylinder this size does not fit a parcel locker – it is delivered by van.
| Cylinder size | Gas volume | Cylinder height | Balloons 30 cm |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 l | 3.6 m³ | 100 cm | ≈ 280 |
| 40 l | 7.3 m³ | 141 cm | ≈ 580 |
| 50 l | 9.1 m³ | 169 cm | ≈ 710 |
Leftover helium in the cylinder
If helium is left in the cylinder after the party, close the valve – the remainder can be used next time.
How long a balloon floats
A latex balloon filled with helium floats for about 6 hours, a foil one for 7 to 14 days. That's why latex balloons are filled on the day of the party, not the evening before.
Hi-Float
Hi-Float is a liquid applied inside the balloon before inflating. As it dries it forms a thin film that holds the helium in and extends the float time 5 to 10 times.
Let it dry for 2–3 hours after inflating. If a balloon bursts before that, the liquid can splash: it is not toxic, but it stains furniture and clothes. Keep the balloons away from furniture for the first few hours.
Safety
Helium is the lightest gas after hydrogen. It is non-toxic, non-flammable and non-explosive, so it can be used where a lot of people gather.
